Over the last 5 years, Downton Abbey has become a household name and has also become synonymous with fashion and design through the early 1900’s. The British Masterpiece Classic drama has inspired us at Planterra with their lush and beautiful floral designs. Weddings were a common theme in the series with Edith, Cousin Rose and the late Lady Sybil being married each once and Mary having 2 weddings before the final season ended earlier this year. The grand staircase made for many a grand wedding entrance in the series.
The bouquetsand hair pieces during these lavish events are simpler than one might expect with everything else being over the top.
Edith’s bouquetbelow consisted of Garden Roses while Mary’s bouquet being equally as simple and elegant with a gathering of white Calla Lilies tied with a ribbon.
The more intriguing piece of Mary’s wedding ensemble includes this stunning hair pin of diamond studded leaves; A distinctive style of the time period.
Another way the ladies of Downton adorned flowers was in their hair as well as on hats, which were an important accessory of the time.
The ladies of Granthom annually prepared for a flower show; a real treat for gardeners and floral lovers alike.
Flowers were also used often for outdoor events and gatherings: Even the Dowager Countess of Granthom was in on the floral fun!
