David is Planterra’s Event Director and has been directing events for our clients since 2010. If you plan a wedding here at Planterra you will get to know David very well. And like those of us that work with him, you will love his style, sharp wit and impeccable taste. David is the core of Planterra events so as we get our blog underway I thought getting up close and personal with David would be a great place to start.
How did you get in to event planning?
I started my career working in development in the visual arts milieu planning openings, galas, fundraising events, performances and lectures. When I returned to Michigan from New York City the opportunity arose at Planterra to create and build the new events business at the Conservatory.
Why do you love working at Planterra?
I love seeing a bride’s face when she sees finally sees the Conservatory completely set up the night of her wedding: there is always such genuine joy.
What is the one piece of advice you give every bride-to-be?
Think very carefully about your guest list. Ask yourself the question: who do I want to share in one of the most special moments of my life?
What is your favorite cocktail?
An Aviation . . . difficult to make . . . obscure ingredients . . . delicious!! On a more simple side of things, there is nothing like a glass of a fantastic southern French red wine.
Your biggest wedding “don’t”?
I think that picking a “color” for your wedding is unnecessary. I love the event environment and tablescapes to be a mix of nuanced textures with metallics and neutral colors to create a stunning backdrop for floral and décor. Do think in terms of overall palettes of color and hue. You may love a coral ranunculus but that does not mean that your wedding has to be “coral.” Rather than a coral bridesmaid dress, perhaps just a pop of color in the shoe or the jewelry: rather than a coral tie, perhaps just a pop in the pocket square or cufflink. Or may just in the flower that you love ;)
Your biggest wedding “do”?
Do think about the comfort and experience of your guests. Although we want our couples to express their unique style and personality in their weddings, there are 100 other people in the room sharing in the experience with you. While you can never please all guests, take into account their tastes in food and beverage, their ages when it comes to entertainment and small touches that make them feel special and attended to as well.
When you’re not at Planterra producing events where could we find you?
I love wine and take great joy in tasting new ones with friends.
If you were not an event designer what would you be?
Live on television as part of a Real Housewives cast.
